How to fit a new carpet

One of the problems with KAs that we have found, is water ingress. This mainly occurs either in the boot or in one or both of the front footwells. It is a issue that can be solved simply with silicone sealer, but usually results in having to replace the carpet...

1.Seats will need to be removed from inside the car before you can remove the carpet. To remove, undo the bolts on the subframe which mount the seat to the floor. The seats are quite heavy to lift out so watch your back when hauling them out of the cockpit, or ideally get a mate to help.

 2. Once the seats are out, remove the weather strips (big black rubbery things) from around the door frame to expose the edges of the carpet. The clips which attach the carpet to the sills vary, but most simply pull upwards away from the floor.

3. Next, loosen the gear lever gaiter and handbrake gaiter from the carpet. These should just waggle out, as they only gently hook under the edge of the carpet moulding. You don't need to take them off completely.

4. Release the carpet from the back of the car by unbolting the bolts securing the lower sections of the back seats to the floor.
5. You will need to undo the seatbelt guide-rail also, this requires a star drive rather than a normal screwdriver.
6. Once the carpet is completely free, you can begin removing it from the car. Start by lifting it from back of the car first and work forwards, then pull out from under the dash. Remove any wet sound proofing and give the floor a good clean. Find somebody with a hoover.

7. To fit the new carpet, simply reverse steps six to one, ensuring that you use a torque wrench to tighten the bolts back up
8. Now is a good time to tidy up any of those DIY ice install wiring looms you may have accumulated. Make sure your mates don't see how much wire you used rather that lifting the carpet in the first place... or they will poke fun.
